We left Seattle at 3:45 am and started hiking from the Lena Lake trailhead at 6:19 am. The hike up to Lena Lake was chill and took us about an hour. After that, we waded across Lena Creek, knee-deep but manageable, and continued toward climbers camp.
About 2 hours in, we hit the first big section of blowdowns. It slowed us down a bit but nothing crazy. Once through that mess, we made it to climbers camp. Roughly 30 minutes later we entered the burn area, and that’s where things got annoying. Route finding through the burn was tedious and the trail faded in and out, but we eventually picked our way through it.
Right around the 4-hour mark, we hit consistent snow and put on crampons, except Isiah, who decided not to bring them because of weight (not advised but worked out fine). From there, the route to the summit was pretty straightforward. Snow conditions were solid; no postholing, good grip, and mellow enough terrain to cruise. We hit the summit at around 12:30 pm, roughly 6 hours and 15 minutes from when we left the car.
After hanging out up top for a bit, we descended back to the snow and glissaded a few sections. It was fun and made things faster. The burn and blowdowns were way easier on the way out since we knew the line. We waded Lena Creek again and got back to the trailhead at 6:15 pm, right on the 12-hour mark.
Overall, a big but very doable day. No major sketch, solid snow, and great conditions for early season. Would recommend!
